Look at the two pictures.
1. Use some words to describe the picture.(yellow, can see nothing but yellow soil; even the strong grasses can hardly grow there; When it rains, the soil will be carried away and a flood will happen. The houses and the villagers are in danger. When it is windy, the wind will blow the soil off. Nothing can grow there. Can animals find food? There will be no life in the hill. What a sad sight!)
2. Use some words to describe the picture. (green. The birds are flying and the sheep are eating grass. The river is clear and clean. Everything is lively.)
3. Who have changed all this?(The Indian women ) How do you know?(They are bare feet and they use a piece of cloth to wrap their faces. They wear loose skirts.)
4. What are Indian girls good at?(Indian dance is very famous. Indians are very good at dancing.) Indian music and films are also very good. They are known and enjoyed by people all over the world. They are very popular.
5. So what are these women doing?(Planting trees) How do they plant a tree?(Revise)
6. Why are doing so?(Is it because it is Tree Planting Day and every one have to plant a tree?)Maybe. What are the other reasons?(Nature has taught them a good lesson and they has realized the importance of forests. So they should plant more trees to grow the forests. They are carrying out a tree planting programme. )

2. There were no trees left on the hills around Tangsa(all the trees in or around the village were cut down)and when it rained, the soil was carried away.
3. trees were cut down and no new trees were planted. The trees could stop the soil being carried away.
4. They began to learn the importance of trees. They wanted to save trees

6. The forest was theirs. They had to save the trees. Otherwise , they would have no wood at all.

Meetings are held in order to explain the programme to the villages.

Twice a year, large teams of women plant thousands of trees.
These small trees are given to the villagers and they are free.
The village women water the trees.
They also make sure the cows do not knock them down or eat the leaves.
People are not allowed to cut down trees when they are still small.----(rules made to protect the forest)
They are only allowed to cut down trees when they are big enough.
Anybody who breaks the rules is punished.
Everybody takes good care of the forests around their village.
Between 1975 and 1980 more than 1.2 million trees were planted.
Trees grow thickly on all the hills around the village. Even in the village itself, young trees are growing.----------------------------------------results
